What is Hyperforin?
Hyperforin is believed to be the primary active constituent responsible for the antidepressant and anxiolytic properties of the extracts of St. John’s wort (SJW). It acts as a reuptake inhibitor of monoamines, including serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, and of GABA and glutamate. It is also believed that hyperforin may be actually responsible for inducing the P450 liver enzymes, which may increase the metabolism of other drugs in the body.
However, hyperforin is a very unstable compound and is degraded by light and oxygen exposure very quickly; therefore, hyperforin is often not standardized because the storage time will change its content. SJW is mostly standardized in hypericin because it is much more stable.
Consult a health care practitioner in cases of sleep disturbances; if taking conventional medication, such as contraceptives, HIV-1 protease inhibitors, non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, anticoagulant, digoxin, theophylline, serotonergic antidepressants, migraine therapies, SSRIs and/or anti-epilepsy drugs; or if symptoms persist. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet light (UV) or UV therapy. If symptoms persist consult a health care practitioner. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
